Footsteps Childcare Gets a New Mural

Coming back after the new year I had planned to do a mural for a Daycare company in Los Angeles called Footsteps Childcare. This daycare is run out of the owners home and they wanted to bring a bit of life to their outdoor space.

The main wall was 30ft long and about 10ft tall. We ended up adding an additional wall to the agreement as well. Being a daycare, the design idea was based around floral, plant and bug life. This was right up my alley! We went through a few drafts and ended with a gorgeous design.

I used a lot of different Benjamin Moore paint colors for this mural, along with a few cans of spray paint for specific visual effects.

The colors used were:

● Black HC-190

● Gypsy Rose- 1327

● Red 2000-10

● Orange Sky

● Bright Yellow

● 574 Once Upon A Time

● 544 Kiwi

We included multiple bugs including a bee, ladybug, grasshopper caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly. Along with a monstera leaf, some other plant designs and multiple decorative flowers including dandelions. The mural took me two days to complete at 10 hours total. Overall this is a bright colorful and cheerful mural that brought me joy while I was completing it. I got the chance to see what some of the kids thought of my mural and they were mesmerized! Local Artist, Aly Campos', December Project

Santa Barbara Paint Depot supports the arts and local artists. Local artist, Aly Campos, has been coloring the world with Benjamin Moore Paints , and we love to support her work by showcasing her on our blogs.

From her own words, Aly shares her latest mural.

Recently a family member of mine reached out to me with a mural idea, to recreate an old photo of her daughters. However, the placement for the mural was going to be a specific portion of her outdoor fence that you could see through the window of her dining room. So when you looked out, instead of just seeing a fence, she would see her girls!

I thought it was an amazing idea and got right to work! The photo I had was older so it was a bit blurry. I took the design and used my

usual shadow technique to create a draft of them, with line work to signify the water. We wanted to keep it simple with colors so we chose to go with black and white to offset the brown of the fence.

Colors used:

● Matte black

● White

I mixed the two colors to get my three versions of gray to create dimensions in the girls. I added a bit of ocean spray to the white background and finished with a light gray shadow underneath each of the girls. I went back into the house to view the mural from there and it was perfect!

How to Use Complementary Colors

For a simple idea to fuse your space with elegance combined with drama, consider using complementary colors, or colors that sit opposite on a color wheel. Two opposite colors, one cool, one warm, create a high contrast dynamic purpose that catches the eye.

For a defined effect, consider using different shades or hues for every color family. There is no right or wrong way to use complementary colors once you define what the colors are. Start with a color you like best and its opposite and also consider the space you want to paint. What feeling or emotion do you want to evoke?

Bedrooms might do well with greens, grays, or blues while bathrooms and kitchens can go more bold by using such colors as yellows or reds.

To help you with understanding complementary colors, consider this information and visual.

Examples of complementary colors on the color wheel

Red and Green
Orange and Blue
Yellow and Purple

Tips for Using Complementary Colors

When designing a room using complementary colors. consider not only walls, ceilings, and windows, but also furniture and accessories. Once you define the room or vision you have, you can use the color wheel to help you pick the color.

You might want to start with a smaller room, such as a hallway bath or mudroom if you are just beginning, but with some confidence and a bit of information, you can also go boldly to design a larger room such as a living room or bedroom.

For example, say you want to create a visual statement in a bedroom using blue and its complementary color, orange.

Consider using Benjamin Moore Color of the Year 2024, Blue Nova 825. This chic blue hue with purple nuance come together to create passion and pleasure. Paint bedroom walls with Blue Nova 825 and add accent pillows, drapes, a bedspread, or throw rug in Benjamin Moore Color Trend, Topaz 070 which is its complementary color.

Paint the ceiling, doors, and window sills in White Dove OC-17 to complete the look!

To soften the depth of color, consider using a different shade of Topaz 070 such as Succulent Peach 068.

Take a Look at Our Local Artist's Newest Project!

For the past few weeks I’ve been helping someone open a new salon in Santa Clarita. Part of my duties in this process was to beautify the space.

Originally the salon had dark gray-ish blue walls that made the space seem claustrophobic. Our first step was repainting the whole space white, adding to the clean, open, and inviting environment we wanted to create. The next step was for me to add the mural.

I have done multiple spaces for this owner and we decided to adapt the same monstera plant visual to go well on the opening wall. Then I added the gold acrylic sign with the painted rectangle in between that fades from pink to purple to gray which goes along with their logo.

Then I thought we needed a pop of black on the desk to tie the space together. So I decided to tape off and paint the trim frames black to balance out the design. Overall, I think it came together better than expected!

● Mauve Bauhaus 1407

Our Banksy Artist Colors our Magnolia Square Location

Our Local Artists Paints a Banksy in our Magnolia Square Location!

I’ve been working with the Santa Barbara Paint Depot for quite a while now, but just recently got the opportunity to do a mural for them.

My previous Banksy inspired mural for a private client inspired Art Prado, owner of our Santa Barbara Paint Depot Hollister location, to ask for a similar image at the second store.

He sent me an inspired photo with his colorful vision incorporated. We drafted up an image and got to work!

I normally work on murals alone but this time I had the chance to work with Amber Prado and teach her a little bit about

recreating a large scale mural.

Here are the Benjamin Moore colors that we used:

● Black

● Red 2000-10

● Orange Sky

● Bright Yellow

● Big Country Blue

● Neon Green

● Mystical grape

The concept was a Banksy inspired girl and umbrella with different colors raining down around

her.

To begin, I projected the girl onto the wall where we wanted it. Then I took some time to sketch her out and we got to work. I had Amber work from the bottom up while I worked from the top down. Our artistic styles compliment each other well so we were able to meet in the middle and create a cohesive image.

I then added the umbrella and we got to work on the colorful rain.

All in all, it took us 4 hours total with two sets of hands. I definitely enjoyed working with Amber to create this beautiful mural, and I’m proud of what we created!

Amber: “The process of making this mural was smooth and a lot of fun all around. I was really pleased with the outcome of the mural and was really happy with how much the colors really enhanced the whole mural altogether. Overall, I am really happy with how everything turned out.”

Plant Butchers Mural by Aly Campos

Santa Barbara Paint Depot's local artist spotlight features Aly Campo's new mural at Plant Butchers, a new restaurant coming soon to Long Beach!

Aly Campos is an inspiring and talented young artist who uses Benjamin Moore paints to produce vibrant murals. Her latest work is detailed in our newest blog!

I’ve had the honor of working with the owners of Sugar Taco to team up with them to design a mural for their new company opening in Long Beach. They have decided to open a vegan deli located directly next to the Long Beach Sugar Taco location. This new place is called Plant Butchers and is scheduled to open October 1st, just a few short weeks away!

For the mural design, they wanted a floral and vegetation wall that had a watercolor texture. To get this effect I used a pouring medium along with the interior Benjamin Moore colors purchased at the Santa Barbara Paint Depot. The medium allowed the paint to be a little more translucent and moveable, creating what looks like a watercolor effect by blending each color together.

My design included plants, flowers, vegetables and fruit all in bright and vibrant colors.

The Benjamin Moore colors used were:

● 052 Conch Shell

● 034 Spiced Pumpkin

● 140 Fruit Punch

● 574 Once Upon A Time

● 544 Kiwi

● 327 Pure Joy

This mural definitely challenged me with the texture, but I think it came out beautifully. It ties in perfectly with the vegan deli concept and brings a bright pop of color to the restaurant.

Aly Campos Banksy Rendition

Banksy Inspired Art by Aly Campos

Santa Barbara Paint Depot's artist, Aly Campos , shares her newest art work inspired by Banksy. Aly is a local artist whose talents can be seen in murals around the area and even in Los Angeles!

She uses Benjamin Moore paints in her projects, and we are lucky to pair with her to see how she brings color to those around her.

In Aly's own words:

Recently, I was hired for an in-house commission to do two murals on outside walls in a client’s apartment.

We went back and forth on ideas and came to the conclusion that we would do palm leaves on one wall and a Banksy inspired mural on the main wall.

The client wanted to add a bit more color, so for the main wall I adjusted a Banksy mural which is traditionally all black and grey, and I added a blue color to the jeans and some blush to the cheeks.

We also decided she wanted it to be a girl instead of a boy, like the original mural. With the final sketch approved, we set up a date and ordered the paint we needed.

For the main wall we used these Benjamin Moore colors:

I started by free handing the outline and base layer of the Banksy mural. This project, being on an exterior wall that was textured stucco, was more challenging to work with. I

t took a couple passes to get the paint into the wall, but once the base layer was done, I let it dry and moved to the secondary wall with palm leaves.

I started with the green and added some white to create a variation in color and add dimension.

Then the client requested some pink palms, so I added that in as well.

Once the second wall was finished, I was able to go in with the black on the main wall and put the shadows into the piece to create the image.

I finished the girl and worked for about 4 hours the first day.

I went back the second day with a ladder and finished the umbrella and redid the arms.

Overall, the project took me 8 hours in total. I stepped out of my comfort zone as an artist and think it definitely paid off.

"Continuing with the restaurant saga, I was able to recreate a design used in another location and upscale it to fit a grand wall in the new location.

The idea was floral and colorful and added to the originality of the restaurant. This was a freehand design that took me eight and a half hours in total, over the span of two days and one of my favorite designs so far.

The next time you enjoy a meal from one of the many spectacular eateries on State Street, you might stop to notice the 10 freshly painted outdoor dining areas.

On a cool morning on January 30 when most of Santa Barbara was sleeping soundly, our Santa Barbara Paint Depot workers and friends were up early doing what we love to do: give back to the community!

The paint project was part of Friends of State Street on their mission to assist businesses in meeting the city’s design guidelines for outdoor dining.

Paint and supplies for the project were donated by Santa Barbara Paint Depot , which didn’t think twice about not only donating Benjamin Moore Paint , but also helping to paint!

Deep Connections to Santa Barbara

Brothers, Art and Fernando Prado of Santa Barbara Paint Depot have deep family ties to Santa Barbara. Their mission has also been to give back to the city from where their ancestors called home and where they continue to be a main focus.

Second Mural at Montecito Village Salon & Blow Dry Bar

Our intern, Aly Campos, has been busy painting the town. Here is the second mural for Montecito Village Salon and Blow Dry Bar. This is the before image…above is the after image.

The time finally came when I was able to begin tying the salon together aesthetically.

I came in one Sunday afternoon and got right to work. I began to clean the wall and brought out the
Benjamin Moore paint that I had previously used in my first mural. I repainted the majority of the wall a gloss white. Then painted the portion of the wall under the trim matte black. I ordered this amazing gold interior design tape, off of Etsy, and began to place each piece accordingly. I would place a piece down, step back, take a look and see where I needed to place the next.

After 5 hours of painting and designing I came up with a scheme that is pleasing to the eye and fits in with the aesthetic of the salon.

This idea was a simple and beautiful way to spruce up the wall and bring some attention to it
without it looking too busy.

This is a trick that anyone can do in their own home! With the back wall done, the salon feels more cohesive and put together than before!

Sugar Taco Mural

With a name like Sugar Taco , you’re already foaming at the mouth with the thought of excellent food. But when you read all about Sugar Taco and its motto to “Save the World One Taco at a Time,” you become a fan.

Sugar Taco is a plant-based company with locations in Sherman Oaks and Los Angeles. They take their mission to “Save the World One Taco at a Time” seriously. Deliberate decisions have been made regarding their menu, decor, and equipment to be mindful of the environment, animal welfare, and our health.

“Since opening in May 2019, we have saved over 100,000 square feet of forest/land that would have otherwise gone to animal feed crops; our menu items choices have saved over 4 million gallons of water, 74,000 pounds of C02 and thousands of animals’ lives!”– Sugar Taco

So when the Sherman Oaks location needed a bit of sprucing up, they turned to Aly Campos , artist and Santa Barbara Paint Depot intern.

I recently got a fantastic opportunity to create a colorful floral mural on one of the main walls at
Sugar Taco in Sherman Oaks.

This place is a Vegan Mexican Restaurant co-owned by some amazing women. I had talked to one of the owners about creating a mural in their newest location before it opened up. But one day I received a message asking if I could create a mural on a wall in the Sherman Oaks location immediately!

Of course, I jumped at the opportunity and got to designing. The next day, I went by the Santa Barbara Paint Depot and went through the Benjamin Moore paint swatches to figure out what colors matched my vision the most.

I ended up with 6 different flat colors:

● Kiwi
● Pure Joy
● Fruity Cocktail
● Razzle Dazzle
● HarborSide
● Leprechaun

I took these colors along with my painting tools and spent almost 10 hours between two different
days creating this mural.

New Mural at Montecito Village Salon & Blow Dry Bar

Last month we introduced you to our new intern, Aly!

Aly is a very talented artist, so when the salon Aly works out, Montecito Village Salon and Blow Dry Bar in Montecito, needed a little face lift, Aly stepped up to the plate!

Here is Aly’s story about the new mural at Monetcito Village Salon and Blow Dry Bar:

The salon opened in 2019, but I started working at this Salon about a year ago. I have always thought the space could be updated and elevated, so I brought up an idea to the owner to paint the front area to make the space more appealing.

To gain new customers and develop a bigger clientele, I wanted to modernize the space and give it a “social media wall” with the goal of creating a bold and stand out wall to photograph hair in front of.

In our salon, we previously had an old painting hanging up in between the front door and the corner window. I figured this space would be perfect for a new design.

I quickly drew up a modern sketch of the design and the owner loved it!

I set up a time and day to paint and reached out to Art from Santa Barbara Paint Depot for all of my supplies. For the new design aesthetic we kept it clean with black & white, so Art offered me ben interior paint. We went with Benjamin Moore interior paints in:

Matte Black 2131-10
Semi-Gloss White OC-151

I ordered a gold acrylic sign from Etsy to add to the modern appeal and when the day came I started painting.

Creating the Mural

This mural took me approximately 7 hours to complete and is completely free hand.

Being an artist, I thoroughly enjoyed this process and Santa Barbara Paint Depot helped make everything go by smoothly.

The final outcome was better than expected, and I have greatly appreciated all of the kind sentiments on my work.

I will be doing another mural (using SB Paint Depot supplies of course) on the other side of the shop to tie everything together in the near future.

Santa Barbara Paint Depot has been around longer than our new intern, Aly, has been born; while it’s known especially for its Benjamin Moore paints and stains, awesome customer service, friendly staff, product knowledge, and handful of snuggly pooches, Santa Barbara Paint Depot prides itself on being a dedicated advocate for the Santa Barbara community.

Brothers Art and Fernando Prado come from a long lineage of family who call Santa Barbara home. Their extended family includes all of our DIYers , contractors , and designers and their family and friends.

So, when entrepreneur, artist, go-getter, family-friend, and talented designer, Aly, wanted to take on more in her already busy life, she turned to the Prados for an internship.

I studied Art History at UCSB and run my own design and art brand called AYC Artistry .

During the week, I am a Receptionist/ Office manager and social media manager. I have lived in Santa Barbara for about 5 years. I grew up coming to this city and have a great appreciation for it and everyone who lives here. I am so excited to create content to share with you all.

A huge believer in donating to the Santa Barbara Community, the Prado brothers have often given paint, supplies, or monetary support to local businesses.

When local theater, Stage Left , asked Santa Barbara Paint Depot to sponsor their summer production of The Little Mermaid, the father (Art) and uncle (Fernando) to three girls couldn’t resist.

Enter Stage Left Performing Arts Training Program

Each summer, Stage Left teaches classes to students who are interested in the arts.

The premise behind State Left is to “offer a training program that combines technique classes and the opportunity for all students to shine! The focus of this workshop is about learning to audition, dance, sing and create a musical. Finally, with Stage Left Productions, we’ll be spending time with friends, getting to know new people, and having a lot of fun!”

Led by performing artists, Shana Lynch Arthurs, M.Ed and Steven Lovelace, each of whom have a lengthy and impressive history in the arts, Stage Left caters to students who want to spend their summer in camp learning to act, sing, and dance. The camp culminates in a musical that showcases their talents for the Santa Barbara community.

The Little Mermaid, the classic tale of a mermaid wishing for legs so she can live on land, was the choice for Stage Left ‘s summer artist training program.

Normally we’d want the students to “break a leg,” but in Ariel’s case, we just can’t wish this upon a young girl who is already wobbly on her feet.

DIY College Student Finds Inspiration with Benjamin Moore Paints

When Chico College student, Mary Jane, ran out of paint for her sorority banners, she turned to her neighbors on Nextdoor for surplus paint to help her complete the project.

Luckily, one of our recent customers had just finalized her home’s paint colors and had 16 sample pints of paint in various colors just waiting for someone to put to good use!

“I didn’t want to recycle the paint,” said our customer, “as it seemed quite a waste. I had such pretty colors, too! Everything from Morning Dew OC-140, Hint of Violet 2114-60, Pale Moon OC-108, Quiet Moments 1563, and Fernwood Green 2145-40 to name just a few. I was so excited to see Mary Jane’s posters and to know Benjamin Moore’s paints will be decorating the halls and home of the sorority.”

DIYer uses Benjamin Moore® ULTRA SPEC® SCUFF-X® INTERIOR LATEX in High-Traffic Game Room

DIY-er and single mom, Michelle, is no ordinary mom. When she moved into her home with her four children, she decides to reinvent her living room into a family game room. But not just any game room would do.

Michelle’s idea of a game room included a rectangular trampoline, a basketball hoop, and dart board. With three boys in the family, the wear and tear of the family game room soon became very visible.

Other Brand’s Latex Paint Did Not Stand up to the Wear and Tear of the Game Room

Over time, the other brand’s latex paint did not stand up to the wear and tear of the game room. The trampoline’s safety pole rubbed against the living room wall and this resulted in the other brand’s paint peeling off.

DIY House Painter Turns to Santa Barbara Paint Depot for Help

As a semi-adept DIYer who has bigger ambitions than she does skill, deciding to undertake the painting of my home required the help of my friends at Santa Barbara Paint Depot.

I grew up watching my parents do all the work on our family home, from painting and wallpapering to trimming and mowing, to painting our family’s two-story house.

One summer my sister had the brilliant idea to dig our above ground pool deeper. It was a group and family effort, but we dug our pool two feet deeper and enjoyed the extra depth!

So, deciding to tackle my own DIY projects is in my blood-but I knew this was going to take the help of Santa Barbara Paint Depot.

Step One: Choosing the Right Paint

My home is in its original condition with the same paint that has been on since it was built in 1995. I like the color, minus the mauve trim, so I knew I wanted something similar to this color.

But the choice of paints and colors was completely overwhelming.

When I went into Santa Barbara Paint Depot , Art Prado took the time to educate me about the types of paints I needed for each area of the exterior of my home.

Benjamin Moore was the paint of choice, known for its durability, timelessness, reputation, and superior adhesion. I did enough research to know that Benjamin Moore was also easy-to-spread, quick drying, and cost-effective.

Art quickly advised that I would be using Regal® exterior paint in a flat finish (105) for the exterior walls and Regal exterior paint in a low lustre finish (103) for wood surfaces such as shutters and my attached fencing.

So Many Colors from Which to Choose! How is a DIYer Supposed to Decide?

Any DIYer should do research before picking a paint color. The first task for me was to drive around my neighborhood and look at colors I liked, didn’t like, and downright refused to put on my home.

I’ve always been attracted to neutral house colors for the base color and picked up the Exterior Collection booklet for design and color inspiration. I also wanted to know what colors were “in” and found the blog, “Greige, the New Color of Champions” very helpful as well as this one, “Tips on Picking the Right Paint Color.”

Then, of course, this reading led me to “Benjamin Moore Introduces the New Color of the Year 2021 and Color Trends 2021 Palette ” and inevitably to this blog, “How to Incorporate the Benjamin Moore Color of the Year 2021 and Color Trends 2021 Palette into Your Home.”

I spent some free nights playing with the Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio App and exploring paint colors on this Benjamin Moore site. Finally, I was smart enough to buy and try several paint samples after reading this blog, “Ask Us How a $6.50 Sample Pint of Paint Can Save Money and Disappointment.”

The winning colors are Stone Hearth (984) for the base and White Dove (OC-17). Here’s a rendering using the color overview/find your color tool on the Benjamin Moore site. I wanted to add a pop of color to the door, so choose Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2021 , Aegean Teal 2136-40.

Recently, we’ve had quite a bit of DIYers wanting to paint rooms. When it comes to redoing a room and choosing the perfect color, DIYers have questions, and Santa Barbara Paint Depot has answers.

Santa Barbara Paint Depot has been in business for 30 years, and we have a lot of experience answering DIY questions.

Here are some common questions and answers regarding a DIYer choosing a new color for their bedroom:

1. What would you advise a DIYer about picking the right color of paint for their bedroom?

First, I would ask about the colors of furniture, flooring, drapes, and accessories that might influence the overall feel of the room.

2. Why is this important?

These details are important because the color that is chosen will also need to complement these influencers.

3. What type of paint should a DIYer use to paint a bedroom?

This would depend on the needs of the DIYer. If the bedroom is a high traffic zone that tends to get marred, then Benjamin Moore’s Scuffx® would be the best choice. If the DIYer is looking for depth of color and sophistication, then Benjamin Moore’s Aura® is the right choice.

3. What sheen should be used for walls, ceiling, trim, and baseboards.

In general, satin and semi-gloss are your best choice for baseboards, doors, and trim due to their ability to easily wipe clean. For the bedroom walls, Santa Barbara Paint Depot recommends flat, matte and eggshell; we recommend flat for the ceilings.

4. How do I know how much paint to buy?

On average, a gallon of paint will yield 320 sq/ft. The texture of the surface will be a significant factor of actual yield. Some textures absorb more paint than others.

Another factor of yield is if a second coat will be required. The rule of thumb is if your new color is more than 25% the value light or dark of the existing color expect to do 2 coats.

5. How can you tell if you need a second coat?

Assuming you used the appropriate nap roller or spray tip, get close to your wall 10-12″ away and see if you can see any spots of your old color. If you can, you need a second coat.

6. Can you supply me with all the supplies I need to start my DIY bedroom paint project?

The initial excitement that led to the project sometimes fizzles out when DIYers find out what elbow grease, materials, or tools are needed to make their project come to fruition.

Ask Art: Our DIYer Receives Excellent Customer Service Regarding the Perfect Sheen

DIYer Ray wanted to paint the front interior and exterior door to his new vacation home, and turned to Art Prado, one of the owners of Santa Barbara Paint Depot, for advice.

Ray emailed Art about the type of sheen appropriate for a front door. Art responded,

“For the interior front door, we have 2 options:

High gloss advance hybrid (available also in semi-gloss); I like this option best- the only downside it is a hybrid which means it’s an oil that cleans up with water. Many people nowadays are avoiding oil-based paints, but they are the hardest single part component paints.
Option 2 is Scuffx Semi-gloss which is a urethane acrylic that is water cleanup, very nice paint but it is less “hard” than Advance.”

Satisfied with Art’s answer and appreciative of the time Art took to educate him, Ray chose the high gloss advance hybrid for the interior of the front door.

Still needing to choose the proper sheen for the exterior of the door, Ray asked, “What would be the problem with putting the high gloss advance hybrid on the exterior of the front door as well? The front door is fairly well-protected in a covered porch, and this is NOT a long-time commitment to the color as we’ll probably replace the front door entirely in a year or two.”

Art responded: “Good question! Benjamin Moore® products are formulated with properties to which they are exposed to. For example, in an exterior application, UV resistance, mildew resistance, temperature malleability and color retention are crucial characteristics for good performance.

Since you mentioned “hardness” I will focus on this characteristic. For an exterior product to perform well, it needs to be less “hard.” Why? Because a hard film will not flex with temperature/climate change. Imagine a front door that is subjected to cool mornings, hot afternoons, and moisture dew nights. A hard film, including a dark color choice will increase the surface temp 20 deg. By definition, hardness will cause the film to be brittle and not have an allowance for flexibility and crack under the stress.

The negative aspect of not having a front door that is not hard is that keys, rings, and other hard objects will scratch the door.

Benjamin Moore knows this and recently introduced Aura Grand Entrance (available in quarts only for $50), a product that’s hard with all the other characteristics needed.

Back to your question, can you use an interior product on an exterior space? Yes, if the area is well-protected from UV and the weather.”

“This color isn’t exactly within the color pallet,” says Carrie, “but the glass in the door was this color so we decided to make the door monochromatic. Any other color made the door look outdated. We will add a piece of art to tie in the color of the door to the main color.”

Santa Barbara Paint Depot would like to introduce our two newest family members, Astraea and Mila.

Astraea is a nine week old black lab puppy who is being mentored at Santa Barbara Paint Depot by her owner, Viviana, although she loves everyone! Astraea specializes in puppy kisses, welcoming all guests, napping, and following Viviana around. We are working on her ball skills and ability to sit, stay, and lie down on command.

Mila is a two-year-old rescue who got the attention of Art, Santa Barbara Paint Depot’s soft-hearted owner. Mila is a gorgeous mixed breed whose parents are the only ones who know her true identity; but underneath that black and tan fur is a whole lot of love, trust, gratitude and spirt. Some guess she is a lab/shep/rottie mix, but to us, she is family

Mila’s specializes in belly rubs, snuggling with Art’s daughter, Amber, and napping on her many beds. The new kid on the block, Mila has some big shoes to fill around here, and we anticipate her upcoming review will be with nothing but high remarks.

ME Sabor Dance Studio Gets a New Look Thanks to Santa Barbara Paint Depot and Benjamin Moore Paint!

When owners Marco and Erika of ME Sabor Dance Studio in Santa Barbara needed to refresh the wall of their three-room studio, they turned to Santa Barbara Paint Depot for help.

The owners of the acclaimed dance studio at 810 E. Gutierrez St Suite A offers Salsa, Bachata, Cumbia, and Merengue dance lessons to all levels of dancers. When they had to shut down the dance studio due to the pandemic, Marco and Erika began teaching lessons over Zoom and worked with the City to teach at Oak Park.

The Hope of Re-Opening the Studio and the Desire to Expand Created a Painting Need

Marco and Erika opened ME Sabor Dance Studio in July of 2018. As owners, directors and teachers, the couple found a desire and interest from the community to expand. The current three-room studio needed to paint the new interior walls to match the existing colors of the original walls.

The other week, one of our customers shared her disappointment that she did not like the color of the 20 pieces of patio furniture she paid a contractor to paint. She was responsible for choosing the color of paint from a paint chip she received from our storeroom. However, when the final product was complete, she was disappointed in the color.

She came to our storeroom upset that the color of paint on the completed furniture did not match the paint chip, when in fact, it had. What she didn’t take account, and what we educated her on, was that choosing a color based off a paint chip is not sufficient.

We asked her the following questions:

1. Did you buy a sample pint of paint?

2. Did you purchase the pint of paint in the sheen you want the product to be?

3. Did you ask the contractor to get you a final sample for approval?

She answered “no” to the questions we asked above.

Steps to Consider When Paying a Contractor to Paint for You

When you hire a contractor to paint a project for you, you need to take the necessary steps to make sure you are happy with the finished product.

1. Buy several sample pints of Benjamin Moore paint. When you start applying the paint and wait for the paint to dry, you get a more accurate and larger sampling of how the paint will look. Expose the painted product to different areas to see how it will look in the sunlight or in the dark. Examine the project at different times of the day.

2. Make sure you have chosen the correct sheen of Benjamin Moore paint. A flat sheen on something that is supposed to be shiny won’t be satisfying, so invest in the correct sheen to get a true visual of the finished product.

As a DIYer with an entire second half of house to paint, I’ve been looking at the Benjamin Moore paint chips I picked a year ago.

I can’t be unlike many of our beautiful Santa Barbara community, wondering how to pick the best Benjamin Moore paint, color, and sheen for the different rooms of my home.

I’m a single mother who uses her room for work, watching TV at night, solace after a long day, and to house my numerous pets.

I have a 14 year-old son who likes to decorate his room with posters and lights and plays video games in it.

My 17-year-old son wants a more mature looking room as he eases out of the nest to go to college.

Then we have a hallway overlooking the downstairs, a guest room, and a loft/office.

How does one pick the right Benjamin Moore paint without getting overwhelmed?

After spending many nights wondering what Benjamin Moore colors to paint the house and asking for opinions form others, I finally eased my mind and turned to Art and Fernando Prado , owners of Santa Barbara Paint Depot.

I wanted to share their advice, as I’m sure it pertains to many others as well.

Tips for a DIYer to Choosing the Right Benjamin Moore Paint

Straight from the paint professionals themselves-tips for a DIYer to choosing the right Benjamin Moore paint:

Find a real example of paint that you like such as in a picture, a neighbor’s house, an item, or something that creates a reaction from you and makes you think, “I like this.”

Next, ask yourself, “Why do I like this?” Concentrate on the whole item and decide if it’s the color or the other elements that go along with the image, picture, home, etc. that cause you to “like” this color.

If you find that you “like” this color because of the elements surrounding the color, realize you may not have the essentials (such as furniture or furnishings) to make this “image” complete in your mind and the color becomes secondary to why you first “liked” the image.

Define what your goal is with the color and the clarity of purpose. Is it a focal point, accent color, or do you want a neutral effect?

Once you have clarity, pick three colors you think you might like and paint draw boards. When the boards are dry, move them around the space and with each color ask yourself:

Is the color dark or light?

Do I like the color? If you answer, “No,” decide why you do not like the color: too much blue, red, green, etc.

How does the color make you feel? Focus on initial reactions as they are good indicators of subconscious affinity.

Avoid asking too many people their opinions and rely more on those of an experienced designer who is trained to incorporate your purpose in guiding your color choice.

Follow the specs in the TDS (technical data sheet) of the paints you choose. Temperature and humidity will affect how paints perform, and applying paints outside of the parameters of the TDS will cause unexpected and undesirable results such as poor drying, curing, and longer recoat window.

Before Santa Barbara Paint Depot had access to the The Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio App & ColorReader , brothers Art and Fernando Prado were asked to color match a variety of items.

There was no limit to the creative imagination of any of Santa Barbara’s customers who wanted nothing more than to match the paint color of a number of items. People brought in ties, diplomas, shirts, antiques, lamps, doors, a piano keyboard lid, greeting cards, fabrics, diving equipment, and more.

Of the more significant items brought in, Art and Fernando remember the item brought in a plastic bag by a man and a woman. Locked inside the plastic bag was a pair of women’s panties, a beautiful magenta color. Like Mother, Like Daughter-Two DIY Projects to Astound Us ?

When DIYer, Raquel, and her daughter, Elise, want to create a DIY masterpiece, the duo prefers to get their paint and supplies from their friends at Santa Barbara Paint Depot. Raquel’s DIY project was beautiful pumpkin art. Fernando, aka, Fern, helped Raquel picked the appropriate products to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind pumpkin pair that hasn’t been in any patches we’ve come across!

Raquel used Rust-Oleum 2x to prime the pumpkin and Benjamin Moore’s Regal® Pearl Select for the finish She purposely chose Santa Barbara Paint Depot to help her with this very special project, stating, “I always feel so lost in big stores and have a hard time finding someone to ask for help. Two DIY Enthusiasts Enjoy a New Bathroom, Master Bedroom, and Guest Bedroom Painted with Benjamin Moore Paints

When DIYers, Jeff and Nicki, decided to add a dog door to their master bathroom in their single story home, they had no idea this small project would end up in an entire bathroom remodel and a repainting of their master bedroom and guest room.

“We just wanted to give our dogs the ability to come and go as they pleased from our master suite to our yard. The bathroom seemed like the best place to put the dog door, and we had room between the sink and the tub to install the perfect door for our three rescue dogs, Monkey, Juno, and Toby.”

However, when Jeff was deep into installing the dog door, he accidentally broke the lighting fixture in the ceiling which then cut into the linoleum in the bathroom floor.

Upset, but not undaunted, the couple took a look at their outdated bathroom and quickly went to work making plans for a state-of-the-art bathroom remodel.

From Outdated Appliances and Flooring to a Bathroom Fit for Royalty and Three Rescue Cats

Nikki, a sales rep for high-end fixtures as well as bathroom and kitchen products and accessories, chose all the bathroom features. Jeff, a truly handy DIY, installed the tile that would serve as the backdrop to the new sinks, cabinets, and bathtub. They installed lights that illuminated the tile and paint surrounding the stand alone bathtub which is used mostly by their three rescue cats to hide, pounce, and wrestle in.

In September, we recognized our clients with a Client Appreciation Event sponsored by Benjamin Moore. Vendors from Mohawk, Titan, Norton, Corona, Honeywell, and more supplied our clients with demonstrations, products, promotions, and advice for their commercial and residential needs.

We are always appreciative of our clients and for your support of Santa Barbara Paint Depot. We have enjoyed helping DIY, Contractors, and Designers transform their residential and commercial buildings into an art project, crafted with pride using our products!

Martinez Catering spoiled us with delicious homemade tortillas and horchata, refried beans and rice. It’s safe to say we all filled ourselves with their mouth-watering specialties!

At Santa Barbara Paint Depot, we understand the needs of our DIY customers , and we have a story for almost every project out there! From She Sheds to Man Caves and every room in between, our customers never cease to amaze us with their creativity, and we LOVE IT!

It’s a Jungle in this DIYer’s Boy’s Room

A few months ago, a mom came into Santa Barbara Paint Depot and shared with us that she wanted to surprise her son by transforming his room into a jungle theme. He was a reptile lover, and she decided to hang jungle linens on his walls and cover them with pictures and cut outs of reptiles.

She draped lantern lights across the ceiling, added a pop up camouflage tent, and hung stuffed animals from the curtain rods. She tacked his favorite jungle hat and pictures of him with reptiles on the walls for a 3-D effect. A straw-threaded rug centered the room, but she knew she was missing one detail.

She wanted to paint the focal wall a jungle green, but she didn’t know what color green would look best. With so many hues of green, she agonized over which hue would complement the other accessories.

Santa Barbara Paint Depot’s Fernando Jones to the Rescue!

Fernando Prado, co-owner of Santa Barbara Paint Depot and a big kid himself, helped her color coordinate the entire room! He even helped her choose a few sample pots of paint for $6 in a variety of jungle colors so that she and her son could create their own wall of slithering snakes, coursing rapids, and replications of their pet frogs.

For the main color of the wall, BM’s Pale Vista was chosen; accent colors included Million Dollar Red, Cedar Green, and Hawthorne Yellow to match Iggy’s skin.
